🛰️🇮🇳 Elon Musk Intensifies Attack on Ambani Over Starlink’s Delayed India Launch
The battle over Starlink’s entry into India is becoming increasingly public, with Elon Musk directly targeting Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani over the delay in launching his satellite internet service.
On October 9, Musk renewed his criticism on X, sarcastically suggesting that Ambani preferred to protect his existing telecom business rather than allow Starlink to compete. He argued that Starlink could bring internet access to underserved communities, helping children learn and small businesses reach customers worldwide.
🔥 What triggered the dispute?
🔹 Musk’s allegations: He previously accused unnamed “oligarchs” of blocking Starlink to preserve their market dominance, but has not provided evidence supporting the allegation against Ambani.
🔹 India’s response: The government says the satellite communications approval process is fair and non-discriminatory. Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia stated that India does not permit monopolies in any sector.
🔹 The regulatory hurdle: Starlink has secured key approvals, but it still needs to complete security requirements and obtain spectrum assignment before commercial services can begin.
🔹 Competition is growing: Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel are also pursuing satellite internet services, while both have previously agreed to distribute Starlink in India once the necessary approvals are secured.
📡 Why does India matter?
With more than a billion internet users, India represents a significant potential market for satellite connectivity, particularly in areas where traditional networks have limited coverage.
But the launch also involves national security, spectrum allocation, regulatory compliance and competition among established telecom operators.
⚖️ The key question: Is Starlink’s delay primarily a matter of regulatory and security requirements, or are commercial interests influencing the process? Musk has alleged the latter, while the Indian government maintains that operators are undergoing the same regulatory process.
Starlink’s commercial launch date in India remains uncertain.
