Alan reflects on a chaotic yet inspiring year in DevOps, highlighting the rise of AI in engineering, the maturation of DevSecOps, the evolution of hybrid work culture, the surge of platform engineering and IDPs, and the continued strength and inclusivity of the DevOps community — while acknowledging the talent crunch, tool sprawl and security theater that still challenge the industry.
That’s a fantastic theme. “Living Through Interesting Times” is the perfect way to describe the current state of DevOps. We are past the initial adoption phase and now navigating a period of rapid, fundamental change driven by AI, new organizational structures, and the persistent need for security.
Here is a look at what many in the DevOps community are expressing gratitude for this year, despite the increased complexity:
Gratitude for Intelligent Automation (AIOps/GenAI)
The most seismic shift this year has been the rapid, practical integration of AI into the pipeline.
-
Thankful for the Relief of Cognitive Toil: The biggest win is the relief from the most soul-crushing manual tasks. AIOps is moving from simple monitoring to genuine predictive incident detection and automated remediation suggestions. The system now flags the root cause with context, rather than drowning the on-call engineer in 50 noisy, unrelated alerts.
-
Thankful for the AI Co-Pilot: Generative AI tools are becoming indispensable for writing initial IaC (Terraform, Ansible) blocks, generating boilerplate YAML for Kubernetes manifests, and accelerating initial test case creation. It’s making the mundane parts of the job faster, freeing up time for strategic architecture work.
Gratitude for Platform Engineering and DevEx
The focus this year has shifted from forcing developers to master the full CNCF landscape to making their lives easier.
-
Thankful for the “Golden Path”: Platform Engineering has finally clarified the tangled mess of DevOps tools by creating Internal Developer Platforms (IDPs). The result is a pre-vetted, standardized, and self-service “golden path” that allows developers to deploy with confidence without needing to be Kubernetes experts.
-
Thankful for Developer Experience (DevEx): The recognition that developer experience is the main driver of productivity and retention is a huge cultural win. The industry is finally seeing the value in reducing cognitive load rather than just buying more tools.
Gratitude for Security as a Baseline (DevSecOps Maturity)
The pain of software supply chain attacks has finally driven security from an afterthought to an embedded function.
-
Thankful for Shift-Right Monitoring: While we’ve talked about “shifting left” for years, the real power this year is the maturity of Shift-Right tools. We now have better Runtime Application Self-Protection (RASP) and Software Bill of Materials (SBOM) management that provides continuous security and provenance verification, not just a one-time scan in the CI process.
-
Thankful for Policy-as-Code: The ability to define and enforce security and compliance rules using Policy-as-Code (OPA, Kyverno) ensures that security becomes an immutable part of the infrastructure definition, rather than relying on human review gates.
Gratitude for Declarative Simplicity (GitOps)
The Kubernetes ecosystem continues to mature, and GitOps has emerged as the definitive operating model.
-
Thankful for the Single Source of Truth: The standardization on Git as the sole source of truth (for both application and infrastructure configuration) has drastically improved auditability, traceability, and the simplicity of rollback procedures.
-
Thankful for Drift Detection: Tools like Argo CD and Flux have made drift detection a standard feature, ending the painful “configuration drift” problem where production environments somehow diverge from what’s in version control.
This year, DevOps has felt less like a job about manually fixing breaks and more like a job about architecting intelligent, self-healing systems. It’s hard work, but definitely interesting!
