TL;DR

  • Pixel phones can now warn you about potential scams when you get notifications from chat apps.
  • You’ll see a “Likely scam” alert on notifications for messages that seem suspicious.
  • Scam detection in messages is available for the Pixel 6 and up in the US.

To protect Pixel owners from the growing problem of scams, Google rolled out Scam Detection functionality for calls and text messages. In September, we discovered through an APK teardown that Google was working to expand this feature to chat apps. Now that expansion is finally rolling out in November’s Pixel Drop.

That’s a fantastic summary of one of the key features in the latest Pixel Feature Drop!

Google has significantly enhanced its on-device security by expanding Scam Detection beyond just phone calls and the Google Messages app, bringing it to other chat applications.

Here are the details on how this foundational update works:

 Scam Detection for Chat Apps

Feature Detail Description
How it Works The system uses on-device AI (likely powered by Gemini Nano on newer devices) to analyze the content of new message notifications from supported third-party chat apps.
Privacy Focus All analysis and processing for Scam Detection happens on-device. The content of your messages is not sent to Google’s servers to maintain your privacy, even for end-to-end encrypted chats.
The Alert If the AI detects conversation patterns commonly associated with scams (e.g., urgent requests for money or personal information), the notification in your shade will display a “Likely scam” alert and often a red warning icon.
Supported Apps The protection extends to notifications from many popular chat apps (though Google generally avoids naming specific third-party apps in its official rollout announcements).
Availability The feature is rolling out to Pixel 6 and newer phones in the U.S. (with expansion to other regions expected).
User Control Users can tap the warning to get more details, dismiss the alert, or mark a message as “Not a scam” to help prevent false positives in the future. The feature is on by default but can be adjusted in the Security & privacy settings.
