A simple ADB command can reverse the Pixel Launcher’s latest search bar change.
Hate the new Pixel home screen search UI? Here’s how to bring the old one back
Last Updated on: December 24, 2025

TL;DR

  • A recent Pixel update changed the home screen search bar behavior, but you can revert it with a workaround.
  • The change forces the search bar to open the standard Google Search UI rather than the Pixel Launcher’s unified search.
  • By using ADB to toggle a specific launcher flag, you can force the device to return to the old unified search experience.

Google constantly experiments with new ways to improve its products, but like all experiments, results vary. In a recent Pixel update, Google modified the home screen search bar to launch the standard Google Search UI rather than the Pixel Launcher’s unified search experience. While the standard UI makes it easier to access AI Mode, it lacks some features and feels less integrated. Fortunately, users who want to restore the old search experience can do so with a simple workaround. Here’s what you need to do.

Don’t want to miss the best from Android Authority?

Google recently “upgraded” the Pixel home screen search bar (as part of the November/December 2025 Feature Drop), but for many, it feels like a downgrade. It now launches the full Google App interface instead of the faster, translucent Unified Search that let you quickly find contacts, settings, and local files.

If you want the old, integrated behavior back, you can use a hidden developer flag to force it.

The Fix: Restore Unified Search (ADB Method)

Since this is a server-side “feature” pushed by Google, there is no simple toggle in the settings menu. You will need to use ADB (Android Debug Bridge) on a computer.

Step 1: Prepare your Pixel

  1. Go to Settings > About phone.

  2. Tap Build number 7 times until it says “You are now a developer.“

  3. Go to Settings > System > Developer options and enable USB debugging.

Step 2: Run the Commands

Connect your phone to your computer and run these two commands in your terminal/command prompt:

Command 1 (Enable the old flag): adb shell cmd device_config override launcher enable_one_search true

Command 2 (Restart the Launcher): adb shell am force-stop com.google.android.apps.nexuslauncher

Your home screen will flicker for a second as the launcher restarts. Once it reloads, tapping the search bar should once again open the native, translucent Pixel search UI.

Alternative: The “Swipe Up” Workaround

If you don’t want to mess with ADB, you can still access the old UI through a different gesture:

  1. Long-press on your home screen and select Home settings.

  2. Tap on Search your phone.

  3. Toggle on Swipe up to start search.

  4. Now, instead of tapping the bar at the bottom, swipe up from the bottom to open your app drawer. The keyboard will automatically pop up with the “old” unified search results (apps, contacts, and settings) intact.

Why did Google change it?

Google’s official stance is that the new UI provides “faster access to AI Mode (Gemini)” and web-first results. However, by offloading the search to the Google App, the system lost its deep integration with your device’s local data—which is exactly what most Pixel users preferred.
