The persistent issue of poor battery life on Google’s Pixel phones has been a recurring theme for several generations, and it appears the trend is continuing with the latest models, including the Pixel 9 series. Users are expressing frustration on various online platforms, particularly on Reddit and Google’s support forums, raising questions about whether Google will ever be able to solve the problem.

The Problem

A significant number of Pixel users, from the Pixel 6 to the newest Pixel 9, report experiencing unusually fast battery drain, often accompanied by the phone becoming uncomfortably warm. These issues are frequently linked to software updates, leading many to believe the problem is not a hardware defect but a result of software bugs or poor optimization.

Common complaints from users include:

  • Rapid drain after updates: Many reports pinpoint a specific monthly or Android version update as the cause of a sudden and dramatic decrease in battery life.
  • High background usage: Users have noted that system-level apps like “Android System Intelligence” and even popular third-party apps like Instagram consume an excessive amount of power in the background.
  • Poor modem performance: The Tensor chip, which powers modern Pixels, has a history of poor modem performance, particularly on cellular data. This forces the phone to work harder to maintain a signal, leading to increased battery drain and heat.
  • Inconsistent performance: The problem is not universal, with some users reporting excellent battery life while others with the same device struggle. This suggests the issue can be triggered by specific usage patterns, apps, or network conditions.

Google’s Response

While Google has a dedicated support page for troubleshooting battery drain, and has issued software updates to address some of the issues, many users feel the company is not doing enough. The official advice often includes basic steps like restarting the phone, restricting app usage, and checking for updates.

There have also been specific programs to address battery issues in certain models. For example, Google has an Extended Repair Program for some Pixel 7a devices with unexpected battery swelling, offering free battery replacements. A similar program was also in place for the Pixel 6a, where a software update was rolled out to limit charging to prevent overheating, and users were given options for a free battery replacement, a cash payment, or a Google Store discount.
