OpenAI launches AgentKit to help developers build and ship AI agents
Last Updated on: October 7, 2025

“AgentKit is a complete set of building blocks available in the open AI platform designed to help you take agents from prototype to production, it is everything you need to build, deploy and optimize agent workflows with way less friction,” Sam Altman said Monday at OpenAI’s Dev Day.

OpenAI has launched AgentKit, a comprehensive new suite of tools designed to help developers and enterprises more efficiently build, deploy, and evaluate sophisticated, action-taking AI agents.

The announcement was made at the company’s DevDay conference, positioning AgentKit as a unified platform to replace the fragmented tools and complex custom code previously required for agent development.

Key Components of AgentKit

AgentKit is a collection of tools that addresses the entire agent lifecycle, from visual design to performance optimization:

  1. Agent Builder (Beta):
    • A visual, drag-and-drop canvas for designing and orchestrating multi-agent workflows.
    • It allows developers to map out logic with nodes, connect tools, configure custom safety Guardrails, and manage full versioning.
    • This is intended to dramatically reduce the time it takes to build and iterate on complex agent logic.
  2. ChatKit (Generally Available):
    • A toolkit for easily embedding a customizable chat interface for the agent directly into any website or application.
    • It simplifies the frontend work, handling features like streaming responses and managing chat threads.
  3. Connector Registry (Beta Rollout):
    • A centralized admin panel for governing and maintaining secure access to internal tools and third-party systems (like Dropbox, Google Drive, SharePoint, and Microsoft Teams).
    • This ensures agents can pull in necessary context and data safely.
  4. Enhanced Evals (Generally Available):
    • New capabilities for measuring and improving agent performance and reliability.
    • Features include Trace Grading (analyzing an agent’s step-by-step reasoning) and Automated Prompt Optimization (generating better prompts based on evaluation results).
  5. Reinforcement Fine-Tuning (RFT) Beta:
    • Tools that allow developers to customize and fine-tune reasoning models with custom evaluation criteria, enabling agents to improve their decision-making and tool-calling skills over time.

Why It Matters

AgentKit moves the focus from simple chatbots to “agentic AI”—systems that can autonomously plan and execute multi-step tasks using external tools. This enables developers to create AI that can:

  • Automate Customer Support: Build agents that can triage tickets, access CRM data, and resolve common issues without human intervention.
  • Workflow Automation: Create internal agents that manage sales research, generate reports, or complete complex procurement tasks.
  • Developer Tools: Build AI copilots that can analyze codebases and perform engineering-related tasks in a sandboxed environment.
