Anthropic and OpenAI CEOs condemn ICE violence, praise Trump

Anthropic and OpenAI CEOs condemn ICE violence, praise Trump
Last Updated on: February 4, 2026

Anthropic’s Dario Amodei and OpenAI’s Sam Altman spoke out against ICE enforcement tactics following Minneapolis violence, with one addressing concerns publicly and the other in an internal message.

This headline captures a complex political “tightrope walk” by the two most influential leaders in AI, Sam Altman (OpenAI) and Dario Amodei (Anthropic).

As of late January 2026, both CEOs issued statements that simultaneously condemned recent violent incidents involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) while praising President Trump’s leadership. This unusual dual-messaging comes amid intense pressure from their own employees and the broader tech community.

 The Condemnation: “Gone Too Far”

The controversy was sparked by reported violence during immigration enforcement actions in Minneapolis, which allegedly resulted in the deaths of two U.S. citizens.

  • Sam Altman (OpenAI): In an internal Slack message to employees (later leaked to The New York Times), Altman stated that what is happening with ICE has “gone too far.” He drew a sharp distinction between “deporting violent criminals” and the current reported tactics, calling it a “civic duty” to push back against government overreach.

  • Dario Amodei (Anthropic): Amodei was more public, appearing on NBC News to describe the events in Minnesota as a “horror.” He emphasized the irony of strengthening democracy abroad while failing to uphold democratic values and rights at home.

The Praise: “A Very Strong Leader”

Despite the harsh criticism of the agency’s tactics, both CEOs noticeably coupled their remarks with expressions of support for the President.

  • Altman’s “Strong Leader” Remark: In the same message where he criticized ICE, Altman described President Trump as a “very strong leader” and expressed hope that he would “rise to this moment and unite the country.”

  • Amodei’s Investigative Hope: Amodei applauded the President for considering an independent investigation into the Minneapolis shootings, signalling a willingness to work with the administration rather than just opposing it.

 Why the Mixed Message?

Industry analysts suggest these CEOs are playing a high-stakes game of “diplomacy by necessity” for three main reasons:

  1. Workforce Pressure: Thousands of employees at Anthropic and OpenAI signed an open letter (organized by groups like ICEout.tech) demanding the companies cancel any existing government contracts with ICE and speak out against the violence.

  2. Regulatory Stakes: With GPT-5 (and Anthropic’s Claude 4) facing scrutiny over safety and energy usage, neither company can afford to be on the “wrong side” of the administration that controls AI regulation.

  3. National Security: Both CEOs have recently pivoted toward framing AI as a national security asset for the U.S. in the race against China, a narrative that aligns closely with the current administration’s “America First” tech policy.

The “Quiet” Giants: Notably, while Altman and Amodei spoke up, leadership at Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Meta has remained largely silent on the ICE controversy, despite similar internal pressure.
